Planning for the 2020 Skipton Swimarathon is underway, with the dates set for Wednesday 7th – Sunday 11th October.

The Skipton Swimarathon is taking place from Wednesday 7th to Sunday 11th October 2020, having been given the seal of approval to proceed by Guernsey’s Director of Public Health, Dr Nicola Brink.

Last year enjoyed the biggest turnout to date with a record number of swimmers taking part. Over 2,500 swimmers took to the pool as part of the community led event, with funds raised reaching over the £60,000 mark for the first time.

This year’s beneficiary is Guernsey Alzheimer’s Association (GAA) who are desperately in need of additional funding to enable them to expand the service they provide to the island, supporting more carers of those with dementia.

Skipton Swimarathon chairman Nick Guillemette said: “The spirit of the Swimarathon was to involve as much of the island as possible, whether they be abled bodied or not, blind, deaf, six months old or 90. It really was the taking part that counts!”

The first Swimarathon organising committee was formed by The Lions Club of Guernsey, Guernsey Round Table and Variety Club of Guernsey under the chairmanship of Harry Bisson in 1977 with the aim of raising funds to put back into the community. Forty years later and the event has grown from 1,000 swimmers to over 2,500 in 2019, raising over £1,600,000 for Guernsey charities.

The Skipton Swimarathon is run jointly by the Lions Club of Guernsey and Guernsey Round Table and sponsored by local bank Skipton International.
